How many names does Taiwan go by…?

Besides Formosa and ROC (Republic Of China)? I’m doing research on stuff in Taiwan, and I would like to know to broaden my search. Please let me know. Thank you.

The independant country refered to as Taiwan, Republic of China, and Formosa, was also once known as the Kingdom of Middag. Despite propaganda attempts to spread the lie (ref: BSherman), it is not now nor ever has been a part of the People’s Republic of China.

Taiwan is a province within the People’s Republic of China. However, due to historical reasons the province is administered by an illegitimate pseudo-government. The province of Taiwan has been in a state of rebellion since 1949, but is expected to reunify with its motherland within the next 5 to 10 years.

You can learn more about the province of Taiwan by learning more about China. Here is a link to an English language version of China’s government website:

Basically you got the main 3 names that everyone agrees are accurately lies already.
Actually my personal favorite is Formosa, the island of beauty. (In parts this is actually accurate.)

The more debatable names that I occasionally use:

I like to refer to it as the "Personal Kingdom of Emperor Matt." PKOEM ….little did you know about your servitude. HA!

    "Land of the Global Mafia."

The "Urban decay experiment in progress".

the "Landscape of our global future without population control." Or LOOGFWPC… its catchy isn’t it!

And the "Idiocracy of the Kuomingdang." IOK See the movie "Idiocracy" for reference. Mmm… electrolytes!

Another, more pleasant name could be the "world’s largest continuous market and parking lot mall area which needs a renovation and beautification program badly." But that isn’t very catchy. It reminds me strongly of an over sized outdoor tropical West Edmonton Mall without air conditioning, sometimes.

All jokes aside, Taiwan is actually nice in places and is slowly recovering from its overdose of industrialization and overpopulation. One day it shall simply be Formosa again. Hopefully not all of it becomes the same as Angkor. Until that day comes, it is a nice, convenient, generally OK place to exist in for me.

The Kingdom of Middag was a kingdom located in central Taiwan. The kingdom was established by the Taiwanese aboriginal tribes of Popora, Babuza, Pazeh, and Hoanya. The kingdom occupied present-day Taichung, Changhua, and Nantou. It was established in the 16th century, before the Europeans arrived in Taiwan. It survived the rulings of European colonists and the Kingdom of Tungning led by Koxinga. However, the kingdom was conquered in approximately 1732 by Qing forces under the administration of Yongzheng Emperor.

The Kingdom of Middag is the western name for the kingdom. In Taiwan, it is known as the Kingdom of Dadu (traditional Chinese: 大肚王國; pinyin: Dàdù Wángguó; Wade-Giles: Tà-tù Wáng-kuó), Dadu being the modern-day name of the historical capital Middag.

The leader of the kingdom also had different titles. The Dutch name of the title was Keizer van Middag, the German name was Keiser von Mittag,The Taiwanese language of benbo aborigines "DuwaDo Ong Go". the Hoklo name was Quata Ong (pe̍h-ōe-jī: Khoa-ta Ông), and the most common aboriginal name was Lelian ("Sun King").
