Taiwan Earth Quake 2010 6.4 mag

Posted by admin on April 23rd, 2010 and filed under taiwan earthquake | 25 Comments »

We can make a difference by coming together in compassionate prayer …..A powerful earth quake has shaken southern Taiwan, causing residents to flee shaking buildings, triggering power blackouts and halting high-speed train services on the island.
At least eight people so far have been reported as injured but no major damage was reported from the 6.4-magnitude quake, which the US Geological Survey (USGS) said struck about 70 kilometres from the island’s second-largest city Kaohsiung.
It was felt as far away as Taipei, which is the capital of Taiwan and is several hundred kilometres north of the source of the quake. Its epicentre was in
inhabited mountainous area in Jiahsian township in Kaohsiung county, which is still recovering from a massive typhoon that triggered floods and mudslides in August, killing about 700 people.
Three resulting landslides have been reported in the area and so far 6 aftershocks have been reported.
Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes.
In September 1999, a big 7.6-magnitude quake killed about 2,400 people in the worst natural disaster in the island’s history.

2009.12.19, 9:02 PM magnitude 6.8 Earthquake in Hualien, Taiwan

Posted by admin on April 17th, 2010 and filed under taiwan earthquake | 7 Comments »

During the December 19, 2009 edition of “New Taiwan Go, Go, Go!” (新台灣加油) an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 hit Hualien, Taiwan. I was out the door before I saw anything happen on the TV, and when I came back inside, I edited this clip to upload.

Watch the host Lu Huei-min (呂惠敏). She seems a bit nervous, but she carries on professionally, telling viewers to turn off the gas and get to a safe location. After the shaking stops, Tainan City Councilor Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) begins an analogy about how everybody’s reaction will be different, just like their reactions to a quake might be.

Taiwan 6.4 Earthquake – More HAARP Man Made Earthquake or Signs Of Earth Changes?

Posted by admin on April 14th, 2010 and filed under taiwan earthquake | 21 Comments »

An earthquake in southern Taiwan has disrupted power supplies in the capital, Taipei and caused the high speed rail service to be suspended.

There have been no reported deaths but several injuries from falling objects.

The US Geological Survey said the 6.4 magnitude quake hit about 70 km (43.5 miles) from southern Kaohsiung city.

Four years ago a 6.7 magnitude quake in the area severed undersea cables and disrupted telephone and Internet service throughout Asia.

Several fires broke out after the latest quake, including one in a textile factory in the southern city of Tainan, which sent out huge clouds of smoke and stalled lifts.

Services on the southern half of Taiwan’s high-speed rail linking Taipei with the south were stopped pending safety checks. Subway service in the city of Kaohsiung was temporarily disrupted.

Power outages hit Taipei and at least one county to the south, and telephone service in some parts of Taiwan was patchy.

Buildings swayed in the capital when the quake struck.

Taiwan A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on Thursday, terrifying residents, disrupting communications and triggering at least one large fire. Sixty-four people were injured, the National Fire Agency said.

No tsunami alert was issued. The quake was centered in the same mountainous region of rural Kaohsiung county that endured the brunt of the damage from Typhoon Morakot, a devastating storm that killed about 700 people last August.

Taiwanese actor Chu Chung-heng said he and other passengers were close to panic when the high-speed train on which they were traveling was dislodged from its track by the quake.

“Many people in my car were screaming,” he said. “I was so scared that I couldn’t make a sound. The train shook very hard, and I thought it was going to overturn.”

Rail service in southern and central Taiwan was suspended, as was the state-of-the-art subway system in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan’s second largest with a population of 1.5 million. Kaohsiung is about 250 miles (400 kilometers) south of Taipei.

In nearby Tainan, a fire broke out in a textile factory shortly after the quake hit, sending huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air. Power outages struck Taipei and at least one county to the south, and telephone service in many parts of Taiwan was spotty.

Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Central Weather Bureau’s Seismology Center, said the quake was not geologically related to the massive temblor that hit Chile last Saturday, but its intensity was unusual for the area.

“This is the biggest quake to hit this region in more than a century,” he said.

The quake’s epicenter was near the town of Jiashian, especially hard hit by last year’s typhoon. A Kaohsiung county official told CTI TV news that some temporary housing built for typhoon survivors collapsed.

The Ministry of Defense said troops were dispatched to Jiashian to report on the extent of the damage.

In nearby Liugui an unidentified high school student described the quake as terrifying. “Everyone was running out of the classroom, and some people fell in the rush,” she told ETTV.

The fire agency said 64 people had been injured.

A spokesman for President Ma Ying-jeou said authorities had been instructed to follow the quake situation closely and take steps to mitigate damage and dislocation. Ma was widely criticized for his government’s slow response to last year’s typhoon.
