Do you support the claim that the ROC still owns Mainland China?
If the ROC were to revise its constitution, and lay claim to only Taiwan (and the surrounding islands now under its control), how would you feel about it?
Burke: I agree with your summary of the situation. Thanks. I admit that I am rather biased because my wife and child are aboriginals.
It is a mutual understanding that the "status quo" remains in the Taiwan Strait for the best interests of all parties involved (Taiwan, China, and perhaps the US.) So any change of constitution that could facilitate a war is no good. Plus, with the Nationalists now in power in Taiwan, such a move towards "independence" is unlikely to happen.
Hey, the way I see it, the Communist PRC claims they own Taiwan, which they don’t, so why not for the ROC to claim they own the Mainland and call it a draw?
Additional comment:
The following are some of the words I posted on Answers for an earlier question, Taiwan Teacher probably has read it already, but here it is again:
For me, I think it’s perfectly okay for a people (nation) to have two States, and Taiwan (Republic of China) deserves a sovereign government free from the People’s Republic of China. On the other hand, I cannot see Taiwan totally independent from China either geographically, historically, or culturally.
The so-called "pro-independence" is in fact "pro-name change." And people will have to wonder, how important is that "change" if it doesn’t change anything?
Lastly, it is a shame that both the KMT and DPP governments, when in power, did nothing to improve the lives of the aboriginals other than the lip service of proclaiming them as the true native people of Taiwan.
First, My dad is a diplomat from Taiwan.
Second, Taiwan has its own government, army, and flag.
Third, Taiwan is ROC, China is PRC. Sun Ye-Sen founded ROC not PRC.
Fourth, Just because China has a lot of people and other countries are too scared to stand up to it doesn’t make Taiwan part of China (Why won’t the US attack China to "protect" democracy?!?! Why attack Iraq?!?! BECAUSE THE US DOES NOT CARED ABOUT DEMOCRACY, IT ONLY CARES ABOUT WHAT IT GETS!!!! (economy benifits)
5. Taiwan was one of the countries that founded the UN, but it got kicked out in 1971 because China wanted to join, in 1979, US broke ties with ROC and recognized PRC.
6. WHY WOULD TAIWAN WANT TO BE PART OF CHINA?!?
In 2004, the UN considered 20 cities unsuitable for human habitation. 16 of them are in China. SARS,AIDS,FOOD POISONING, NO BASIC FREEDOM, COMMUNIST, NO COPYRIGHTS AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS WHAT YOU WILL FIND IN CHINA!!!!!
Please, could people try to reply WITHOUT offending other people? And please gives ex
I have read many other people’s answer to the same question, and some replies were kind of offending, could we please try not to offend anyone? Thanks
No matter which side you choose, could you give examples?
Thanks
PS: I’m not going be bias on the best answer, as long as you give a good reason (I will be constantly "fighting" for my country, responding to every reason) I will choose the BEST not the one I like to hear.
Also, for the China people, tell the truth if you are in the US, your Communist government can’t kill you across the seas. If you are in China and you are seeing this, how are you still alive?
Thanks for the feedback, I have read all of the answer so far and for those that don’t think that Taiwan is a country, I have already thought of arguments, I might just open a new question title
Very insulted on this issue: is Taiwan part of China?Number 2, to argue against the wrong facts people have.
PS: I’m asking WHAT is true, NOT what people think. Terrorists think that US should die, Bush thinks that terrorists should die, does that make either of them right?
Going to school now, rebutting everyones "negative (different option or not knowing the truth)" answer when I get back, thanks for everyone’s answer!
Thanks for commenting on everyone’s answers us abc (I think I know who you are
). Waiting for more views and comments!
I will answer your "answer" ´¨ Í
but not now, going to sleep now,
but anyways,
what do YOU know about culture?
you typed in sim, not trad, Mainland China culture has all been lost.
walter
benifit of people in mainland
?
first, I’m assuming that you have a ok life, you have time to use a computer, but guess what? how many people in China can even afford to eat? I care about China, but you have to admit, the government is corrupted, do you know that the government is corrupted in China? if not, that is because control of the press, and control of textbooks/news.
But still, you do have a point, If China changes to democracy, then why should Taiwan declare independence?
Say hello to you firstly, and tell you I am not to insult you here.As a Chinese,so do you,I am very happy to see that my country are getting better and better everyday. But I am asking you a question? That is what do you know about China? politically and culturally?I bet you don’t? What is Communism? What kind of a life we are living? You know nothing about it.Please say talk about China till you really know something about her. Do not talk about human rights to us Chinese,We are happy with our lives here in our country, and we know we still have a long way to go to live a better life, but at least we are happy with it.Human rights?OK, just see what you have there? You mean vote????Is that a better system than what we have here in China, and what do you know about our system? My dear friend,I am here asking you to pay a visit to what you called mainland China, and draw a conclusion after your trip. That would be better,if not, please shut up and keep quite on this human rights issue!!!
Then,your questions,
1.Taiwan has its own government, army, and flag.It is true, but it doesn’t make it a country.
2.Taiwan is ROC, China is PRC. Sun Ye-Sen founded ROC not PRC.You are wrong to call Taiwan ROC,cuz mainland China is part of your ROC,it is written in your law.
3.democracy???Got fed up with it?You got an idea of democracy? So what do you know about Chinese democracy?you just have no idea…..
4.Taiwan was one of the countries that founded the UN,wrong again,go to school and ask your history teacher about it and get correction
5.WHY WOULD TAIWAN WANT TO BE PART OF CHINA?!?
Because 对于中国,一寸领土比生命更有价值。在这一点上,我们永远不会退缩(For Chinese,a piece of territory is much more important than life.To this point,we will never give in.and for that SARS,AIDS,FOOD POISONING, NO BASIC FREEDOM, COMMUNIST, NO COPYRIGHTS you mentioned,I am sorry to say that you have more problems than we do….(Did you see that all the things really happened in China, and if it happened,is it that serious???)
I am getting insulted on this issue, too,my dear friend,Taiwan is a part of China,no matter you admit or disagree,it is part of China, and you have no right to declare Independence, because it’s a problem of Chinese people, include you Taiwanese and me Chongqingnese.
Do not make the other Chinese feel sorry because of you Taiwanese, see what your politic looks like,a completely joke. And there is no position for US to interfere,if you guys wanna be friends with us Chinese and talk about human rights, then respect us firstly,Taiwan issue is none of your business.
All in all,we Chinese is eager to be friends with all people from all parts of the world, but please know something true about us before making friends with us,please. And be real friends and truthful.Thank you.
Taiwan was NEVER part of People’s Republic of China (PRC). Today, Taiwan is STILL NOT part of China, and so WILL NEVER be part of China.

and stayed in power?
Would China be a free, democratic and prosperous superpower almost up there with the US?
What would Taiwan be like today?
thank you
No one knows for sure but based upon Chiangs personality China would have been ruled by a dictator leavened with western ties instead of one with Communist ties. My opinion is based upon the traditional governance of China with Emperor being similar to dictator differing in that emperor was under mandate of heaven and dictator the mandate of military power. Would the common Chinese have had a better life is a moot point.

Seeing as how the supposedly the ROC government is not the legit government of Taiwan, and PRC has NEVER been a ruling party in Taiwan. Should the de facto country of Taiwan be returned to the last real government that controlled it..Japan?
There are a lot of Taiwanese who would rather be under Japanese rule than to have to chose between being crushed by the PRC, or being sold out by their government.
So when will Taiwan become Taiwan-ken again?
hell, i wuldnt mind.
japanese girls are soo cutie!
Why can’t China just leave Taiwan alone, so they can both continue to seek their own destinies?
This question is in response to another Y/A member’s posting a question about the US interfering in "Taiwan/China" relations.
It strikes me as odd that
a country (the USA),
wishing to continue 65 years of DEFENDING the people of another country (ROC/Taiwan)
in their desire to continue their autonomy
while they face an "enemy" (PRC) who continually presents themselves as a threatening aggressor nation which will not retract its arsenal so as to offer a peaceful solution to a long-standing war,
should be viewed as "medling in others’ affairs."
Since the PRC (created in 1949) has NEVER owned Taiwan,
can someone please explain the rationale behind the PRC’s continued interference with, and threats against, the Taiwanese?
The only "China" that claimed Taiwan was eliminated long ago. And, even THEY did not control Taiwan, they only "claimed it" as theirs and sent a lot of troops to conquer it, kill off its residents, and take the land. When will the Chinese ever let Taiwan exist in peace with them?
@claw – The TRA was enacted in 1979 as a CONTINUATION of the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty which began way back in 1955, and it made little change in the terms for guaranteeing the safety and DEFENSE of the Taiwanese (it does NOT allow the ROC to receive any support if they take offensive action against the PRC). I find it hard to believe that you would classify the PRC’s shelling citizens of the ROC every other day for many years "very peaceful" relations. Can you see the falacies in the CCP propaganda you are attempting to spread?
Bottom line: Is the USA, Taiwan, or ANY other foreign country threatening the PRC and laying claim to their territory with a threat of military force if they do not hand it over? Message to the CCP and its supporters: Seek peace, not war. Your actions and motives stink badly of Naziism and former Japanese imperialism. How odd it is that you should present such an abhorrence for them, while copying their ways as if they were right… Wise up, fly right, and become stronger and more respectable through your benevolence.
You really want to know the reason….
Apart from propaganda and ego……
Oil fields. In 1970, oil was discovered in the Spractly islands. It is estimated that they are the 4th largest in the world.
Taiwan has full claims to some of these islands and hence the oil fields. If Taiwan came back to the PRC then the PRC would have claim to these resources.
Problems and tensions between China and Taiwan are due to the CCP not the USA, if Taiwanese really wanted to be part of the mainland they would vote for it. Only China is demanding that Taiwan should rejoin. Taiwanese on the other hand are no so eager to return as quickly.

The old Republic of China was founded in 1911, mostly conquered by the Japanese in 1931-38, and finally overthrown in 1949 by the communist forces under Mao Zedong. Everybody in the old regime who could fled across the sea to the island of Taiwan, where they continued to exist as the Republic of China. And for 61 years each side has claimed to be the sole ruler of China, when there have actually been two Chinas since then.
